SARAH V. ROSS
CLEARFIELD, Penn. – Sarah “Sally” Violet Ross, 95, of Clearfield, PA, passed away on Monday, December 29, 2014, at the Chesapeake Shores Nursing Home in Lexington Park, MD after a long struggle with dementia.
She was born on August 5, 1919 in Clearfield, PA. She was the daughter of the late Lula Ethel (Robb) Henchbarger and Robert Clair Henchbarger.
In 1940, Sarah married Cecil Blair Leach, of Grampian, PA. Blair preceded her in death in January 1961. In 1967, she married Reverend Harry A. Ross, of Sydney NY, who preceded her in death in February 2003.
Sarah served as a country housewife in Chestnut Grove, near Grampian, PA and as Clerk and Deputy County Treasurer in the Clearfield County Treasurer’s Office. She was also involved in Child Evangelism Fellowship, teaching
“Good News Clubs” in both Grampian and Clearfield, PA. She worked with her husband, Rev. Ross, at the First Baptist Church of Sydney, NY and at Calvary Baptist Church and Valley Heights Christian Academy in Norwich, NY. After “retiring” to Lancaster, PA, she worked in a number of cities for Kirby-Smith Associates, a ministry related fund-raising organization. Her work life continued into her early eighties.
She is survived by her sons, Samuel E. Leach (Susan) of Leonardtown, MD; Rev. Tom Ross (Carol) of Greenville, SC; James Ross (Lynne) of Paterson, NJ, and John Ross of Norwich, NY. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, and husbands, she is also preceded in death by her siblings Ruth Isabelle, David, Robert, and William Henchbarger.
Sarah received expert and loving care from the staff of the Chesapeake Shores Nursing Home in Lexington Park, MD during her final 3 years.
Friends and family will be received on Sunday, January 4, 2015 from 2-5 p.m., with a Memorial Service celebrated at 4 p.m., at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD.
Interment will be private at Chestnut Grove Methodist Cemetery in Grampian, PA.
