MARY VIRGINIA OWENS
BUTLER, PA – Mary Virginia Owens, 82, of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away on December 12, 2014 at 2:25 p.m. at the Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot, PA.
She was born August 20, 1932 in Norwich, New York to the late James A. Haynes and Grace E. (Transue) Haynes.
Mrs. Owens was a 1950 graduate of Norwich High School, Norwich, NY, then went on to Albany Business College, earning an Executive Secretarial degree. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a secretary to the president of Bennett-Ireland, Inc. in Norwich, NY. Most recently, she worked as a secretary at the YWCA in Butler, PA for many years, from where she retired. Mrs. Owens was a member of St. Peter's Anglican Church, Intermediate League of Butler, Butler Hospital Auxiliary and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing Bridge, traveling and her grandchildren.
Mrs. Owens is survived by one son, Joseph P. Owens, Jr. of Butler, PA; two daughters, Sarah O. Jones and her husband Barry of Media, PA and Elizabeth A. Hannum and her husband Elliott A. Jr. of Richboro, PA; two grandchildren, Jack E. Hannum and Meghan E. Hannum; one brother, James A. Haynes of Utica, NY; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. Paul Owens, whom she married August 21, 1955, and who passed away January 11, 2010; four sisters, Ellen Blenis, Alice Hauer, Grace Hendricks and Carolyn Zaharis; and her step-mother, Janet Haynes.
There will be no public visitation.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Peter's Anglican Church, 218 East Jefferson Street, Butler, PA, with Rev. Andrew DeFusco officiating.
Arrangements are being handled by the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Hospice, 3500 Brooktree Road, Suite 320, Wexford, PA 15090, Butler Public Library, 218 N. McKean Street, Butler, PA 16001 or St. Peter's Anglican Church, 218 E. Jefferson Street, Butler, PA 16001.
