JENNIE VERSTEEG
NORWICH – Jennie I. Versteeg, 93, of Norwich, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2014 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Born February 8, 1921 in Utrecht, Netherlands, Jennie was the daughter of Lambert and Sophia (Jacobsen) Intres who immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1920’s. In 1943, she married Dirk Versteeg and after World War II, raised two children in Cedar Grove, NJ.
Following her husband’s death, Jennie moved to be closer to her brother and his family in Norwich, residing most recently at the Chenango Valley home on Fair Street. She was predeceased by her son, Kim, and by her brothers, Lambert Intres (Edie) of Wayne, NJ, and Jean Intres (Ruth) of Naples, FL. Jennie is survived by her daughter, Jennie Versteeg, of Peterborough, Ontario, by her niece, Patricia Brown (Charles) and grandniece, Alison, as well as Gary Intres (Debbie), Rick Intres (Nancy), Chuck Intres (Jenny) and Cathy Natoli (Michael) and their children. She will also be missed by her friend, Linda Shader and by all those who knew her.
Previously known for her skills as a seamstress, cross-stitcher and gardener, she continued needlework after moving to the Chenango Valley Apartments. There she also developed skill as a painter in acrylics, winning the Chenango County seniors competition.
Funeral services for Jennie will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 21, 2014 at the Wilson Funeral Home. Rev. Nancy Hale, Pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
