Irving Diamond

NORTH NORWICH – Irving Diamond, 80, of North Main Street, North Norwich, went to be with the Lord early Thursday morning, Sept. 28, 2006, at his home, surrounded by his wife and family.
Born in Columbus on June 1,1926, Irving was one of the six sons and six daughters born to Eugene and Iva (Ingraham) Diamond. Following service to his country at the end of World War II, where he was stationed in Occupied Japan, Irving began his working years in 1950 as a sheet metal worker for Norwich Wire Works. At the time they closed their doors in 1972, Irving had worked his way up to the position of supervisor. He then worked for a few years as a supervisor for Carworth, Inc., of Greene, and worked briefly as a stockroom clerk for Lewis Engineering, from which he retired in 1979 due to poor health.
On Jan. 26, 1951, in Unadilla, Irving married Mary Thorpe, and they spent their many married years raising their family. Irving adored his family, and spent much of his free time teaching his skills to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman, and showed his love of gardening by creating an asparagus garden and a blueberry patch for his grandchildren. He was a life member of the Norwich VFW and a member of the Norwich American Legion.
Irving is survived by his wife, Mary Diamond of North Norwich; by his children: Donald Diamond and wife Carol of Middletown, Ohio, Paul Diamond and wife Barbara of Earlville, Connie White and husband Craig of Norwich, and Judy Diamond and David Robinson of Oxford; by his sisters: Laura Jennings of Pennsylvania, and Anne Lanzoni of Moravia; and by nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marjorie Diamond, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Irving was predeceased by five brothers and four sisters, as well as by his parents.
Funeral services for Irving will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Fred Albrecht, retired Methodist minister, will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday from noon until the service at 1:30.
