Andrew J. Scorza


OXFORD – Andrew J. "Andy" Scorza, 92, of Oxford, NY passed away on October 28, 2014 at the NYS Veterans' Home, Oxford. The son of the late Joseph and Margurite (Greico) Scorza, Andrew was born on October 2, 1922. On September 9, 1949 he married Marie A. Gallagher in Queens, NY who predeceased him on June 27, 2005. Andrew was a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Oxford.
Preceded in death by his son, Stephen Joseph Scorza and brother Bernard Scorza, Andrew is survived by his daughter-in-law, Ann Scorza of Oxford, his grandchildren, Jonathan Scorza of Angel Fire NM and Suzanne (Scorza) Desfosses and her husband, Mark Desfosses of Gales Ferry, CT; his great grandchildren, Lucy and Stephen Desfosses as well as his sister-in-law Joanne Scorza and her children, Jeffrey, Cynthia, Valerie, Richard and Leslie of Hummelstown, PA. He is also survived by his nephews, Edward Cugell and wife Alice of Madison, CT, Gary Cugell and wife Sheila of Chestertown, NY and niece Adrienne (Cugell) Sommer and husband Robert of Lancaster, PA and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews. He also leaves behind his loyal friend Caroline Whitney of Norwich, NY.
Andrew was a 1941 graduate of Bishop Laughlin High School, New York, NY and he proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a member of Fort Hill Post #376 of the American Legion, the Elks Club of Zephyrhills, FL the Northport (Past President) and Oxford Lions Club. Andrew most enjoyed the simple pleasure of a game of golf, attending the morning coffee club at Mr. Chubb's in Oxford and attending and playing cards at the Oxford Senior Center. Indicative of his fighting spirit and enjoyment of life Andrew enjoyed an airplane flight around Oxford in celebration of his 92nd birthday in early October. He will be missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's RC Church, State Street, Oxford, NY on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Ralph Bove officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at St. Joseph's Church Hall on Saturday, November 8 from 11:30 AM and lunch will be served prior to the Mass.
