PAUL R. WALSH
SMYRNA – Paul R. Walsh, 87, of School St., passed away Friday, October 17, 2014 at the Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.
He was born November 15, 1926 in Scranton, PA, a son of Edward and Lillian Kendrick Walsh. He was a member of the first graduating class of Harper College in Vestal, and received his MA and PhD from Syracuse University. In later years he received his law degree from the Potomac School of Law. Paul was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army. He was onboard ship going over the International Date Line, scheduled to be in the first troop landing for the invasion of Japan when the initial atomic bomb was dropped. Following his honorable discharge in 1947, he worked for the DH&W railroad. Paul later pursued a career as a teacher in Vestal and Marathon NY before joining the staff at Sherburne-Earlville Central School where he taught social studies, economics and history for 18 years, retiring in 1976. On July 30, 1968, Paul married Linda Follett in Baltimore, MD.
Paul was a member and past president of the Sherburne-Earlville Teachers Association, and a member of the Sherburne Investment Club.
Surviving are his wife, Linda; 17 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and –nephews, great-great-nieces and –nephews, as well as many cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and John Walsh, and a sister, Ann Gorman.
Memorial services will be held at 2pm Monday, October 27, 2014 from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne, NY, with Pastor Paul Hills of the Christian Baptist Church of Sherburne officiating and Marion Schlaefer as organist.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City, NY at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
