DAVID F. O’NEIL
SYRACUSE – David F. O’Neil, 70, of Syracuse, passed away early Friday morning, Oct. 10, 2014 surrounded by his family in St. Joseph’s Hospital of Syracuse.
Dave was born on June 9, 1944 in Norwich the son of Edward and Dorothy Hall O’Neil. He grew up in Norwich and was a 1962 graduate of Norwich High School. Deciding to further his education he attended Syracuse University as well as Cortland State where he earned his Masters Degree. While attending SU, Dave was a 3-time Varsity Letterwinner for the SU Baseball Team in 1964-1966. He has been a member of the SU Alumni Association for 28 years. Dave taught math for 34 years for the Syracuse City School District at Eastwood Junior-High, Grant Middle School and Fowler High School, retiring in 1999. He also served as a baseball coach at Henninger High School in the early 1970’s
Following his retirement, Dave enjoyed traveling to Ireland, Italy, Hawaii and the Yankees’ spring training camp, as well as spending time with his three children, his three grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews.
Dave is survived by his children Christopher (Sean) O’Neil and his wife Colleen, Ryan O’Neil all of Rome, NY, his daughter Lisa O’Neil of Ithaca, his grandchildren Patrick, Kevin and Alison. Also surviving are his siblings Jacqueline O’Neil Fagan of Rensselaer, NY, William (Billy) O’Neil and wife Juliet of Morrisville, VT, Joseph O’Neil of Sparks, NV, Peter J. O’Neil of Binghamton and Patrick (PJ) O’Neil of New Berlin along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dave was predeceased by his parents Edward and Dorothy, sisters Patricia Anne and Margaret (Peg) and brothers Michael and Fred.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Dave will be held on Friday, Oct. 17, at 10 am from St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Ralph A. Bove, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends may call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6-8 pm. The Recitaton of the Rosary will be at 5:15.
