NORWICH – Clyde Edward Wright, 82, of Norwich, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at home with his loving wife and family by his side. Clyde was born July 11, 1932, son of the late Claude and Rachel (Vanvalin) Wright, in Unadilla. On June 15, 1996 he married Virginia Townsend in New Berlin.
Clyde was a happy go lucky man. He was always singing, whistling or tapping his toes. Clyde could easily dance anyone under the table, and he enjoyed Mollie B's Polka Party. Clyde spent many nights dancing at Tall Pines and the Rooster Tail. Clyde was an avid sports fan. He rooted for the Dallas Cowboys and the NY Yankees. He was asoftball player himself. Clyde participated in men's softball leagues well into his fifties and continued coaching local youth teams into his sixties. Clyde took great joy in life's simple pleasures, raising animals and playing horseshoes. Clyde had worked in the area for most of his life. He worked for the County Highway Dept. for 20 years and went on to become a groundskeeper at the Norwich Fair Grounds. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Clyde is survived by his wife, Virginia Wright of Norwich; children, Linda and Frank Williams of Plymouth, Bev and Gerald Brill of New Berlin, Bruce and Karen Wright of Norwich, Brian and Denise Wright of South New Berlin, Lisa and Rob Gould of Norwich, Candy and Tom Petry of South New Berlin, Laurie and David Alexander of Sapulpa, OK and David Stevens​ and Guillermo Mendoza of Brooklyn; sisters, Gladys Young of Oneonta and Doris Jester of PA; ​brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leon Richards of Fl, Bruce and Sharon Townsend of Tx, Jean and Alf Franklin of Norwich, Paul and Doris Townsend of Norwich, Albert and Darlene Townsend of Fl., ​ 13 grandchildren​, ​21 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Clyde was predeceased by 6 brothers and 6 sisters.
A funeral service for Clyde was​ held on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 1:00pm at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Friends​ for the family called​ from 11:00 am until the time of service on Saturday. The ​service was officiated by ​Rev. Robert Decke​r. Family and Friends enjoyed a luncheon at the Baptist Chruch in South New Berlin after the service. ​
The family would like to extend gratitude for the wonderful care Clyde received from the nurses at Chenango Memorial Hospital in the ICU and Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County. Memorial contributions may be made to Chenango County Hospice, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.
