Angelo Zieno


NORWICH – Angelo S. Zieno, 92, of Rome, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2009, at the Masonic Care Community.
Born in Norwich on March 4, 1917, he was the son of the late Angelo Salvatore and Grace Biviano Zieno.  Angelo was educated in Norwich schools where he was an all-around athlete in High School football and wrestling.  He held a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from the University of Maine at Orono.
He received and honorable discharge from the Aviation Cadet Corps Training Detachment. Angelo was a district soil conservationist with the Department of Agriculture for 10 years in Binghamton before joining RADC in 1955.  In April of 1967, he was awarded and Air Force System Command Certificate of Merit for his work on the “Compass Eagle Support” project.  He retired in 1981 with a total of 34 years in Governmental service.
Angel was actively involved in Boy Scouting at St. Mary’s Church in Rome.  He also belonged to the Tocolano Club.  Angelo was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer.  He always loved to be out in nature.  He also enjoyed bowling and made sure his children learned to bowl early in life as well as sharing his love of golfing with his children and grandchildren.  He was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist.
Angelo is survived by his daughter and son in law, Thomasine Zieno Jennings and Frank W. Jennings of Ilion: his son and daughter in law, Dr. Salvatore A. Zieno, MD and Dr. Christina Zieno of Bellevue, NE; five grandchildren, Thomas Jennings of Rome, Dr. Elizabeth R. Jennings, DO and her husband, Dr. Thomas C. Dispenza, MD of Fishers, IN, Dr. Angel S. Zieno, DO and his wife, Kim of Kansas City, MO, and Julianna and Kathryn, at home in Bellevue, NE; and a half-brother, George Archie of Naples, FL; he also leaves several nieces and nephews as well as many cousins, including Robert Biviano of Mohawk, NY and Anna Glisson of Williamsburg, VA. Angelo is also survived by his dear and devoted family friend, Arthur Brancato, who was always there to make his life more comfortable.
Angelo was predeceased by his dear wife of 56 years, Tommasina Curcio Zieno, in October 2002.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. from the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, and at 9: a.m. at the Church of St. John the Baptist.  Entombment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday 4 to 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Angelo’s name to Rome Catholic School or Jervis Public Library.
