Louis Walker Curtis


GUILFORD – Louis Walker Curtis (Lou), age 90, lifetime resident of Guilford NY, died at home with his family at his side Friday, September 5, 2014. He was born and died in the same home.
Lou was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the United States Army. He was a former member of the Guilford Fire Department and a member of the Ambulance Squad. Lou retired from Bendix Corporation in 1983 where he was a shop foreman. His 31 years of retirement were spent travelling the USA, making furniture and maple syrup for family and friends, and enjoying a fulfilled life with Midge, his wife of 71 years. They were both 19 years old when they were married in Binghamton NY after taking a train and a cab to the preacher’s house. Lou had a remarkable journey and was admired by everyone he ever met, even Red Sox fans. He was a die-hard Yankee!
He died peacefully with no regrets.
Lou was predeceased by his parents Louis Caswald Curtis and Elsie Maude Curtis, and siblings Gertrude May Curtis, Genevieve Louise Curtis, Ruby Marie Curtis, Elsie Pearl Curtis, Edna Ruth Curtis, Ethel Maxine Curtis, Edward Clarence Curtis and Joyce Anne Curtis. He is survived by his wife Florence (Midge) Curtis, his brother Robert Curtis of Greene NY, his sister Joan (Paul) Layne of Bridgewater VA, his children Jack (Barbara) Curtis of Cheney WA, Richard (Jill) Curtis of Wellington CO, Carol (Joseph) Schelah of New Woodstock NY, Colleen (Richard) Carbery of Manlius NY, and many nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His ashes will be interred years from now in Butternut Cemetery, Gilbertsville NY, in one receptacle with those of his loving wife Midge when her time comes.
A Memorial service will take place Thursday, September 11th in the Guilford Methodist Church at 11:30 am followed by a light lunch in the church hall.
Contributions may be made to Guilford United Methodist Church or the Guilford Fire Department.
