Evelyn Whaley


SHERBURNE – Evelyn F. Whaley, 87, of West State St., passed away Sunday, September 7, 2014 at her home.
She was born August 23, 1927 in Cato, NY, a daughter of C. Henry and Marion V. Whitmore Gibbs. Evelyn was a graduate of Norwich High School and pursued her higher education at the University of Rochester, School of Nursing. On November 22, 1945, Evelyn married John C. Whaley in North Norwich. She had worked at Bennett Ireland Corp. in Norwich for many years, and was a postal clerk in the North Norwich Post Office. She had also worked for the family business, Whaley’s Food Store in North Norwich. Evelyn was the North Norwich Town Clerk for several years.
She was a member of the North Norwich United Methodist Church; the North Norwich Garden Club; and a former member of the North Norwich Firemen’s Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling water skiing, and loved spending time with her family at camp on Hatch Lake.
Surviving are her husband of 68 years, John; her children, Wendy and Jim Sauder of Goshen, VT; Victoria “Vicki” Clark of Denver, CO; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clare H. and Joan Gibbs of Norwich; Robert M. and Charline Gibbs of North Norwich; sister-in-law and her husband, Jessie and Bill Labor of North Norwich; grandchildren, Emily, Matthew, Jayme, Lacey, Ryan, Courtney, Adam, Natalie and Brittany; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, John A. Whaley on July 19, 2002.
Funeral services will be held at 7pm Wednesday September 10, 2014, from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.
Burial will be private in the North Norwich Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5-7pm prior to the service.
