Leonard L. Blackman


SMYRNA – Leonard L. Blackman, 81, of Flat Iron Rd., passed away Sunday, August 30, 2014 at his home.
He was born June 13, 1933 in S. Plymouth a son of William C. and Ceta Cobb Blackman. He received his early education in a one-room schoolhouse in Preston before graduating from local schools. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Leonard worked in construction for O.W. Hubbell & Co. in Utica for over 40 years. He was married to Betty Porter and later was united in marriage to Doris Stevens who predeceased him on November 3, 2008.
Surviving are his children, Scott and Mari Blackman of Brookfield; Mark Blackman, Sherry and James Brooks, Penny and Wayne Eggleston, all of Smyrna; Brian and Kim Blackman of South New Berlin; William Brazee-Blackman of Oxford; sisters, Helen Markham and June Manwarren, both of Oxford; and Grace Franklin of Norwich; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lester Blackman, Fred and Bertha Blackman, all of E. Pharsalia; Leslie and Joyce Blackman, and Art Blackman, all of Preston. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Tonya Aikens, Mellisa Brazee, Jason Jipson, William MacGuire, Chyanne Blackman, Ashlie Shaver, Tabitha Evans Brianna Brooks, Jordan Brooks, Kaylee Brooks, Kati-jo Blackman; great-grandchildren, Jade, Tyler, Miakoda, Richard, and Callie. He was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Gifford and Myrtle Horton; a brother, Carl Blackman; and a brother-in-law, Leon Franklin.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Friday, September 5, 2014 from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne, followed by interment with military honors in the West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5-8pm.
