HOBERT A. “HOBE” SWEET
NEWPORT – Hobert A. “Hobe” Sweet, 76, passed away at his home in Newport, on August 16, 2014 after a short illness.
Hobe was born in Utica on June 27, 1938, the son of the late Hobert D. and Margaret (Huckabone) Sweet. He graduated from West Canada Valley Central School and was a member of the Army National Guard. At one time, he owned a small sawmill in Smyrna, and later worked for Cianbro Corp. from which he retired in 2006. After retiring, he enjoyed designing and building hand crafted furniture and other woodworking projects in his home workshop. He also enjoyed hanging out at “deer camp” and hunting with his sons and friends. Hobe was a member of Post #0876 American Legion, Sherburne and West Canada Creek Association, Newport.
He is survived by his loving companion and caretaker, Terry France of Newport; his children, Laurie Anne Sweet of Sherburne, Mark (Shelly) Sweet of Deer Park, TX and Ronald Sweet of Earlville; and his grandchildren, Ashley Sweet (Mike Tompkins) of NYC and David Sweet of Deer Park, TX. He was beloved “Uncle Sonny” to his nieces, Denise Morgan (Nancy Cunningham) of New Hartford, Mary Lee (John) Dedicke of Newport and Janet (Brian) LaRock of Poland, and their families, Karen (Jon) Hopsicker, Tucker and Hudson, Heather Dedicke, Amanda LaRock and Justin Morgan. In addition, he is survived by two half-brothers, Scott (Denyce) Sweet of Cold Brook and Kevin (Patricia) Sweet of Poland; and his former wife, Kathy Sweet of Earlville. Missing him terribly are his furry children, Molly, Jake, Toby and Harry. He was predeceased in January by his sister, Joan Evans, with whom he had a close and loving relationship.
Respecting Hobe’s wishes, there will be no services and burial will be private at Poland Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. for the compassion and comfort extended to Hobe and his family in his final days. A special thanks to Judy Stubba.
