Charles Shapley


Charles R. (Charlie) Shapley Sr., 62, of Sherburne, passed away Friday afternoon, June 20, 2014, at home with family by his side.
Charlie was born in Sidney on March 18, 1952 the son of the late Ernest and Elizabeth (Wood) Shapley. He attended schools in Sherburne, Oxford and Mt.Upton. A hard worker all of his life, Charlie had been employed by Earlville Paperbox for 32 years. He also enjoyed working part time on the farm owned by his sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Larry Clark.
Charlie loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending as much time as he could with them. He was an avid stock car fan and loved to go fishing and camping. Over the years he had bowled in several leagues and had the privledge of bowling a perfect 300 game. Charlie will best be remembered for his bicycle riding over the streets of Sherburne. His bike was his pride and joy and he would have it serviced on a regular basis as we do our cars.
Charlie is survived by his children; Charles Shapley Jr. and wife Anna of Illion, Kimberly Shapley of Sherburne and Tanya DeLee and husband Brian of Otselic, his companion Mary Neilson, his sisters Elizabeth Curry and husband Charles Jr. of Sherburne, Carolyn Clark and husband Larry also of Sherburne, Permelia Wood of Marathon, his brothers Francis Shapley Sr. and wife Jeanette of Norwich and William (Bill) Roosa Sr. and companion Melissa Rifanburg of Sherburne. Also surviving are his 9 grandchildren Joseph, Daniel, Bradley, Nathan, Christian, Justin, Kayla, Kesshia and Jade, 3 great grandchildren Tristyn, Braidyn and Colton along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents Ernest and Elizabeth, Charlie was predeceased by the mother of his children Marilynn Berg Shapley.
Funeral services for Charlie will be held on Thursday, June 26, at 1 p.m. from the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Brad Keator, Pastor of the Chenango Christian Curch of Norwich will officiate. Interment will follow in the Earlville Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral home on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 1pm.
