George Ashcraft


George Ashcraft, 91, of South Plymouth, passed away Thursday afternoon, June 19, 2014, at his home.
George was born in Norwich on April 20, 1923 the son of William A. and Minerva (Felt) Ashcraft Sr. He attended school first at Stewart’s Corners and his high school years were in Norwich where he graduated with the class of 1941. Following his graduation, George began working for the Norwich Wire Works until being called for duty in the United States Navy. He served his country in the Navy from April of 1944 until his honorable discharge in May of 1946. During his military duty, George was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal. Returning home from his military service he regained employment with the Norwich Wire Works where he continued to work for many years as a machinist and a tool & dye maker.
On June 26, 1948 in Greene he married Ileana French and in 1951 they moved to South Plymouth until her passing on July 4, 2008. George continued to make his home in South Plymouth until his death.
George was a kind hearted quiet man whose family ment the world to him. Over the years he and his wife would take people in who had no where to go and give them a home and family.
George is survived by his children; Rose Maricle and husband LeRoy of South Plymouth, Leslie Ashcraft and wife Janine of Morrisville, his grandchildren Christopher Maricle and wife Colleen of Deland, FL, Brian Maricle and companion Nicole Cole of South Plymouth, Bethany Stearns and husband Thomas of Bouckville, Courtney Kraft and husband Ben of Fayetteville, Deanna Ashcraft of Black Mtn., NC and Patrick Ashcraft of Morrisville. Also surviving are his 2 great grandchildren Chase and Claire Maricle along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his wife Ileana, George was predeceased by his sister Flora (Pete) Palmer and his brothers William Ashcraft Jr and Harry Ashcraft.
A funeral service for George will be held on Wednesday, June 25, at 2:00 pm from the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeremy Stopford, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Earlville will officiate. Interment will follow in the South Plymouth Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday from Noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m.
