Robert L. Wessels


SPARR, FL – Robert (Bob) Laurence Wessels, 84, went to be with the Lord on Friday morning, July 24, 2009; his 63rd wedding anniversary. His loving wife, Elsie, and family surrounded him during his final days at "Estelle’s" Hospice House in Ocala, Fla.
The first-born of Laurence and Mary (Carr) Wessels, Bob was born in December of 1924 in Johnson City, NY. He grew up on the family farm in Oxford, and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Returning to reside in Guilford, NY, he joined the building construction trade, and soon started his own business. His demand for quality and honesty of character made him a popular builder and individual. Bob married Elsie Fowler on July 24, 1946, after a 3 week courtship! They resided, and raised their family, in Guilford, NY. Retirement moved them to The Villages, Fla. and in 2008 they became residents of Sparr, Fla.
Robert has been a member of: Calvary Baptist Church and The Chamber of Commerce of Norwich, NY, The Elks Club of Sidney, NY and the American Legion Post 347 of Lady Lake, Fla.
An avid golfer, Bob enjoyed couples league with Elsie, and any serious or fun golfing with his cronies. His sense of humor and easygoing manner made him a welcome partner in all aspects of life. He will be greatly missed.
Robert is survived by his wife, Elsie Wessels of Sparr, Fla.: his children and their spouses: Virginia and Roger Foley of Sparr, Fla., and Daniel and Noreen Wessels of Oxford, NY: four grandsons, and five great-grandchildren with two more on the way. Also surviving are his siblings and their spouses; Helen and Richard Dickson of Sidney, NY, Mary Lou and John Bickos of Mt. Upton, NY and Raymond and Mary Ann Wessels of Guilford, NY; a special sister-in-law, Myrna Wessels of Norwich, NY, and nieces, nephews and cousins. Robert was predeceased by his son, Stephen R. Wessels; and his brothers, Richard Wessels and Frank Wessels.
At his request, no services will be held at this time. The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Bob’s friends, former employees, and all who touched his life, with special gratitude to Chris Bickos.
