Raymond Herrington


Raymond Frederick Herrington, 87, of Norwich retired Victory Markets Executive, passed away Tuesday morning, April 8, 2014, at his home.
Ray was born on Sept. 10, 1926 in Amsterdam, NY the son of Raymond and Elizabeth (Snyder) Herrington. A native of Amsterdam he was a 1944 graduate of the Amsterdam High School. Ray furthered his studies by attending Niagara University under the Aviation Cadet Program and served with the Army Air Force in WWII. Following his honorable discharge he attended and graduated from Albany Business College in 1947.
Prior to joining Victory Markets in 1965, Ray was employed by Armour & Co. for 18 years serving in many capacities up to Plant Manager in Binghamton, NY when he left to join Victory Markets. He retired from Victory Markets (Great American Food Stores) after 25 years of service as Senior Vice President of Perishable Operations in 1990. While serving with Victory, Ray served as Chairman of the Board of New York State Food Merchants Assoc. from 1980-1981. He also served as Chairman of the Meat Committee of Topco Associates of Skokie, Ill. and was a member of the Red Meat Advisory Council for New York State.
Ray was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich where he served on the vestry, a former member of the Board of Directors of the Chenango County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Norwich Planning Commission. He was also a life member of B.P.O.E. #1222 Elks Lodge of Norwich and a 40 year member of the Canasawacta Country Club.
Ray married his devoted wife of 65 years, Ilene (Hallenbeck) Herrington, on June 5, 1948. Besides his wife Ilene, Ray is survived by his brother and sister-in-law David J. and Jane Herrington of Ft. Myers, FL, his sister Mildred Barber of Bellevue, WA and his brother-in-law Donald Simpson of Lexington, KY. Many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by his sister Jean Simpson.
A funeral service for Ray will be held on Sat., April 12, at a.m. from the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich. The Very Rev. Charles Taylor will officiate. Interment will be in the Middleburgh, NY Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Friday from 4-6 p.m.
