Walter Huskins


Walter Ray Huskins left this world peacefully to be with his Lord on Tuesday, March 26, 2014, with family at his side, at The Norwich Rehab and Nursing Center.
Ray was born on September 12, 1923 in Bakersville, NC, the son of the late Walter Carroll and Fannie (Buchanan) Huskins. Ray attended school in Bakersville NC.
Ray came to Oxford to work on his sisters’ farm, it was there that he met the love of his life, Helen May Turner. On September 23, 1944 they were married in Oxford. Ray was employed as a Forman at the New York State Department of Transportation in Oxford and Sherburne. Ray will be remembered as a dedicated, kind and loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed collecting model antique cars and gardening. Ray and his wife spent most of their time devoted to each other; they were communicants of the North Norwich United Methodist Church and loved to travel together. In their later years spent at Norwich Rehab together, Ray never lost his desire to take care of his lifetime love and best friend, Helen.
Ray is survived by his loving wife Helen Huskins of Norwich, son Alan R. and Kathleen Huskins of New Mexico, daughter, Sheila Huskins and her best friend Gary Phillips of Norwich, grandchildren, Kelly, Andrea, Christina, Stephen, Nathan and Misty, sisters, Mary Harrison of North Carolina, Margaret Church of Buffalo and Betty Davis of Virginia, 15 great- grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, a special nephew Gary Follet of North Carolina and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ray was predeceased by his brother and five sisters.
A funeral service for Ray will be held on Monday, March 31, 2014 at noon, from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Rev. Lawrence Russell, Pastor of the North Norwich United Methodist Church will officiate. Friends may call on Monday, from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Oxford.
