William Nightengale


SHERBURNE – William M. Nightengale, 84, of Sherburne and Oxford, passed away Sunday evening, July 26, 2009, in the Valley View Manor of Norwich, where he had resided for the past two weeks.
The son of Miner and Clara Ashton Nightengale, Bill was born in Sherburne in October of 1924 and spent most of his life there, moving to the Bida Home in Oxford only when his health declined. In his early years he worked as a farm hand on several Sherburne area farms, including the Cunningham Farm, and later was employed for over 30 years by the Chenango County Highway Department. On Oct. 28, 1967, in Sherburne, Bill married Dorothy Nelson Nightengale, who predeceased him.
Bill is survived by his step-children, Garry Pirk of Mocksville, N.C., and Terri Biviano and companion Charlie Zbydniewski of Munnsville; his son-in-law Anthony Funaro of Norwich and by his sisters and brother, Shirley Miller of Conn., Jean Miller of Ohio, and Robert Nightengale of Syracuse. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Melissa Wackford, Deb Thompson, Paula Lewis, Garry Pirk Jr., and Renee, Robert and Justin Pirk, Sam, Coy and A.J. Biviano; by many great grandchildren, and by nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by his step-daughter, Sandra Funaro, and his sisters and brothers, Bessie, Rosemary, Donald, and Loris.
Funeral services for Bill will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the R J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeremy Stopford, pastor of the Earlville Baptist Church, will officiate.
Interment will be in Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m.
