MABEL E. BAKER
NORWICH – Mabel E. Baker, 80, a life long resident of Norwich, passed away Monday evening, March 3, 2014, at home with her family by her side.
Mabel was born in Norwich on Jan. 24, 1934 the daughter of Benjamin and Ruth Cookhouse Combes. She was educated in the Norwich schools and on Nov. 20, 1954 in Norwich she married Clayton A. Baker who passed away Feb. 12, 1998. Over the years she had worked for Rea-D-Pack Foods Inc. in No. Norwich, Valley View Manor Nursing Home, the Chenango County Museum and also provided homecare for several friends in the area. Mabel will best be remembered for working with her husband Clayton in the operation of their own business, Bakers Sanitation Route, for over 30 years.
Mabel is survived by her children Robert Baker, of Norwich, John Baker and wife Amy of Rochester, MN, Susie White and husband Donald, Jimmy Baker all of Norwich and grandson Kenneth Chrisbacher and wife Tanya also of Norwich who Mabel raised as her own son. Also surviving are her sisters Mary Lindholm and husband Ted of TN, Eva Fowlston of Norwich, Helen Rowe and husband Clarence of Sherburne, Rose Whittaker and husband Jim of Norwich, June Conway and husband Ernest of Norwich and Nina Lieb also of Norwich, her brothers Charles Combes of No. Norwich, John Combes and wife Betty of No. Norwich, Frank Combes and companion Sharon of Preston, and Earl Combes and wife Rose of Cincinnatus along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her husband Clayton, Mabel was predeceased by her sisters Grace and Pearl and brothers Harry, Joe and George.
Graveside services for Mabel will be held in the spring from the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
