Brian Smith


Brian E. Smith, 81, a life long Norwich resident, passed away Sunday afternoon, Feb. 23, 2014, in the Bassett Medical Center of Cooperstown.
Brian was born in Norwich on Oct. 19, 1932 the son of Vinson and Alice Barnes Smith. He was educated in the Norwich schools and following his education entered the United States Air Force serving his country from Aug. 27, 1951 until his honorable discharge on Dec. 31, 1956. Returning home to Norwich, Brian gained employment with GLA and its successors retiring on Dec. 31, 1996. Following his retirement Brian decided to stay at home and help with the chores around the house. Over the years he had enjoyed bowling in several of the city leagues.
On April 7, 1956 he married Shirley Watson sho survives.
Brian is survived by his wife Shirley of Norwich, his children Sheryl Rowe and husband Robert, Susan Pope, David Smith and wife Cindy all of Norwich and Douglas Smith and wife Sheron of Morrissville, his brothers Earle Smith of Troy and Norman Smith and wife Joan of Oxford. Also survivng are his grandchildren Brian, Erica, Brad, Jeremy, Alyson, Bobbi Jo, Justin, Lisa, Erica, Josh, Albert, Wyatt and Jesse along with 16 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, several nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law Virginia (Ginger) Smith of Preston.
Brian was predeceased by his sisters Jean and Sharon Smith and brothers Nelson and Vinson Smith.
Private funeral services for Brian will be held at the convenience of the family from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. His grandson, Rev. Brian Smith will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the North Norwich Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
