Gordon Schrag


Gordon LeGrand “Gordie” Schrag, 71, New Berlin, NY, died Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the Southeast Volusia Hospice Care Center, Edgewater, FL. Mr. Schrag was born November 29, 1942 in Leonardsville, NY to the late George and LeOra Schrag.
He was a 1960 graduate of Leonardsville Central School and retired in 1998 from the Department of Transportation for the State of New York in New Berlin after 32 years. He was a winter resident of New Smyrna Beach, FL since 2005. He was an honorary member of the New Berlin Fire Department and EMT. He coached youth sports, helped with the Boy Scouts and was voted New Berlin Citizen of the Year in 2005. He leaves his wife of 48 years, Sharon Beadle Schrag; two sons, Wade (Patti) and Brett (Renee); six granddaughters, Keana, Sierra, Jaiden and Natalya, all of New Berlin, Rachael of Norwich, NY and Crystal of Edmeston, NY; one sister, Janet (Raymond) Washburn of West Winfield, NY; several nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and cousins; one uncle, LeGrand “Bill” Sweet of the Veterans Home in Oxford, NY and a special cousin, Ida Mae (Tony) Tophoven. Gordie’s biggest enjoyment was family and he loved family and friends gatherings. He also enjoyed attending Flea Markets and auctions, was a big collector and loved getting a bargain. He still found enjoyment reminiscing about the town softball team where he played short-stop after graduating from high school.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Fire Department or Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, Southeast Care Center, 4140 S. Ridgewood Ave., Edgewater, FL 32141. A memorial service will be scheduled May, 2014 in New Berlin. Dudley Funeral Home, New Smyrna Beach, FL, is in charge of arrangements (386-428-6414).
