CHARLES A. HENDRIX
Mt. UPTON – Charles Hendrix, 83, lifetime resident of Mt. Upton, passed away peacefully at home on February 12, 2014, surrounded by his loving family and two dear friends. Charlie, son of the late Floyd and Edith (Light) Hendrix, was born on a small farm near Rockdale, NY on April 10, 1930. He is survived by his loving wife, Leota (Pierce) Hendrix, who he married on July 10, 1957 in the Mt. Upton Methodist Church. He is also survived by his daughter, Brenda E. (Hendrix) Craver; two grandsons, Luman C. Craver and Jeremiah H. Craver and Megan Cutting; and four great-grandchildren: Kyleigh Pedersen and Cameron, Ryan and Mason Craver. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Mark Craver.
He served in the Army in the early 1950’s being stationed in Germany. Most will remember Charlie as an exceptional self-employed masonry contractor, specializing in slabs and foundations. At times the whole family was seen on the job. For a number of years, he tapped maple trees hauling the raw sap to Sipple’s in Bainbridge.
He joined the Borden Hose Fire Department when he was 16 and served as an active member for over 50 years. He enjoyed trapping, fishing through ice and cutting wood. Back in the 1960’s, Charlie and Leota, along with the Odell family, were founding members of the Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club. He also enjoyed dirt bike riding with a group of friends.
In later years, he enjoyed gardening, was an avid reader of Western stories and liked working fill in puzzles. He was in his glory picking on you.
Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Interment will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St. Norwich, NY 13815.
