MARYLAND, NY – Karen A. (Nichols) Shaw, 61, of Maryland, formerly of Sherburne, passed away Monday, January 27, 2014 at the Norwich Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
She was born in Norwich on December 4, 1952, a daughter of the late Donald and Mable Angle Nichols. Growing up in Oxford, she was a graduate of the Oxford Academy in 1970 and attended the Utica School of Commerce. Following her school years, she had worked for several area companies, including Preston Manor, Champion Products, in Norwich, and Fox Hospital in Oneonta until her retirement. Karen married Michael J. Smith, and later, William G. Shaw, both of whom predeceased her.
She is survived by her daughter, Michele Smith (Tim Tolley) of Maryland; three grandchildren, Amanda-Jo, Timothy and Zackary. Also surviving are her sisters, Patricia (Frank) Speziale of Norwich; Deborah Beckwith of McDonough; Dianna (David) Conklin of German; and Donna (Tim) Tefft of Oxford; a brother, Donald (Sue) Nichols of Solsville; her step-mother, Margaret Burke of Oxford; an aunt, Alice Angle of Norwich; many nieces and nephews; and her hamster, Fred. She was predeceased by a brother, Gary Nichols.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm Saturday, February 1, 2014 from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.
There are no calling hours.
Interment will be private at the convenience of her family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815; or to a charity of your choice.
