Delvin Sullivan


OXFORD – Delvin “Sully” Sullivan, 92, of Oxford, passed away on June 16, 2009 at the New York State Veterans’ Home, Oxford. 
He is survived by his wife, Julia Rucker-Sullivan of Binghamton, formerly of Oxford; his daughter, Joyce Ogunade of Springfield Gardens; heis step-son Dwight Rucker of Nashville, Tenn. and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his sons, Delvin, Jr. and Raymond; his step son, Ronald Rucker and his sister.
Sully grew up in New York City, where he had several jobs including being a trolley operator, bus driver, subway operator and a police officer for the NYC Housing Authority.  He then worked at the 1964 World’s Fair and transitioned to the hotel business. He trained at Queens College and became Food Service Director in the hotel. In 1971 he took a management position in food service at SUNY Binghamton, retiring in 1993. He then founded the Cozy Nook Diner in Oxford. He served on many boards, including Catholic Charities of Chenango County, Chenango Housing Improvement Program, and the Area Agency on Aging.  He was recognized by the Oxford Masonic Lodge, the Oxford Rotary Club, the Oxford Lions Club, the Oxford Grange and the Chenango County United Way as Citizen of the Year at various times.  He volunteered as Santa for children in Broome County and Chenango County. He started the Free Thanksgiving Day Dinner in Oxford.  He was a member of the Interracial Relations Task Force at Oxford Academy and Central School and was a certified mediator for Chenango County.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Church of Oxford, 25 Main St., Oxford with the Rev. Allen C. Lang, officiating.  Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford. 
Memorial contributions may be made to the NYS Veterans’ Home, 421 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford.
