Rosalyn Scheuerman

NORWICH – Rosalyn “Roz” Scheuerman, 70, of 1111 Goode Road, Ballston Spa, passed away in the evening of Saturday April 18 at the Saratoga Hospital.
She was born April 5, 1939 to Mary Eloise (Chase) Henkes and Edward Henkes. She was a graduate of Norwich High School and the Albany Medical Center School of Nursing. She began her career in the emergency room at Chenengo Memorial Hospital and eventually became a supervisor. Later she opened her own dog-grooming shop and became well known in the area for her expertise in the field. She was also a professional dog handler and showed her own long and smooth coated Chihuahua’s as well as those belonging to other show kennels throughout the state.
Roz had been on the Board of Directors of the Chenango County SPCA and later became its first Executive Director, serving for sixteen years. She had received several awards for her contributions to the humane field. Rosalyn felt that her greatest gift to her community was
the total renovation of the original shelter on East River Road as well as the building of the kennel addition, the first open air cattery in New York State, and the creation of the largest humane education program for elementary schools in the state. She retired in 1998. Her legacy was a state-of-the-art adoption shelter renown for its high pet adoption rate, its spay-neuter program, and the quality care experienced by the animals entrusted to it.
Mrs. Scheuerman also loved country dancing. She and her husband Neil attended many competitions and seminars on the east coast. She loved her dance students and developed many friends through this endeavor.
Rosalyn spent her last years with her husband residing in their cape-chalet home built on her daughter’s llama farm. Her last years were spent fulfilling her dream of living on a farm. She greatly enjoyed helping her daughter with the llamas. She especially loved the babies. She relished talking them for walks in downtown Saratoga with her daughter. She felt great pleasure every time she watched the llamas, especially her girls Ming-Ming and Chilean Lady, as she drove up her long drive.
Roz was a member of the Milton Grange and the Ballston Spa / Milton Seniors. She had begun teaching line dance classes at the senior center and also helped to make arrangements for their monthly dances. Since moving to Ballston Spa she met many wonderful new friends!
On Aug. 19, 1961 in Norwich she married Neil C. Scheuerman who survives her. She is also survived by her daughter Kim Scheuerman of Ballston Spa, her son Scott Scheuerman of Cicero, her sister Marilyn Douglas, her nephew, Peter Alotta and his children Katherine and P.J., all residing in Massachusetts. Rosalyn’s greatest treasure was her family. She is remembered as a loving and supportive mother.
