Lavern Alger Jr.


BRISBEN – LaVern William Alger Jr. 81, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2009 at home.
He was born March 15, 1928, son of the late LaVern and Gertrude (Hood) Alger. LaVern was also predeceased by brothers Charles, Roland, Harold, Irving, and Burton. He married Virginia Olin on Oct. 10, 1947.
Besides his loving wife of 61 years, he is also survived by daughter and son-in-law Vicki and Donald Reynolds, Oxford, son and daughter-in-law Randy and Mary Jane Alger, Greene, daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Joe Burdick, Oxford; grandchildren Staci and Emmett SanSoucie, Corey Phillips, Stephanie Alger and Allan Soper, Katie and Brendon Ives, Jared Alger and fiancee Allison Dilfer, Ben Burdick, and Ginny Burdick; great-grandchildren Evan San Soucie and Elizabeth Ives; two sisters Bernice Gardner and Louise Davy; several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. His family as well as his dog Lucy and his cat Peter will miss him.
LaVern farmed for several years, worked at the Raymond Corp., worked road construction, ran a self-employed Auto Body Repair Shop, and in later years was maintenance supervisor at NBT, Norwich from where he retired. He formerly served as Fire Chief of the Brisben Fire Department. He enjoyed playing musical instruments with family and friends and watching NASCAR.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. April 15 at Root Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Taylor of Smithville Center United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Sylvan Lawn Cemetery Greene.
