Charles Nutter


MT. UPTON – Charles Nutter, 88, of Mt. Upton, passed away on April 17, 2009.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was born on March 3, 1921 in Harrison County, West Virginia to the late Clead and Lilian Bernhardt Nutter.
He married Judyth Michael Nutter on Jan. 14, 1961 in Cambria Heights, and they were together for 51 years until her passing in November of 2007. Formerly of New York City and Long Island, they lived in Mt. Upton for 39 years.
Nutter was a retired carpenter and contractor. In addition to his self-owned business as a general contractor, he was a member of Carpenter Locals 258 of Oneonta, 149 of Tarrytown, and 11 of Hawthorne. His long career encompassed all phases of commercial and residential construction – from homes and office complexes to bridges and highways.
A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion.
A warm, funny, loving and gregarious man, he enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren. A natural debater, he enjoyed discussing topics as diverse as politics, religion, music and the arts, and construction technique.
His wife Judyth, his sister Violet, his brothers Cleophas, Edward and Robert and his son Rodney predeceased him.
He is survived by seven children: his son Charles Nutter and his wife Mary and their children Rebecca Fey and Christopher; his daughter Linda Nutter, her husband Dan Gurlitz and their children Julia and Matthew; his son David Nutter, his fiancee Tammy Mikalunas and her children Megan and Shania; his daughter Donna Yerton, her husband Lance and their children Clinton Zimmerman and Nicole; his son John Nutter and son Derek; his son Michael Nutter, his wife Sarah and their son Cole; and his daughter Adrian Fairweather.
He is also survived by his sister Evelyn, his son Rodney’s children Rodney Jr. and Courtney Katsiaficas, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends and union brothers.
Funeral arrangements are by Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., Unadilla.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main Street, Sidney, NY 13832. There will be no calling hours. The service will be conducted by Charles’ long time friend Dominic Bethel, minister.
