George Sands


NORWICH – George M. Sands, 79, a resident of Norwich, passed away on Sept. 12, 2006 at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
The son of Queenester Ratliff and Ben Sands, George was born on Sept. 5, 1927 in Manhattan.
George was a community leader. His passions were fighting injustice and helping people achieve their goals. In addition to his community involvement, George was an active participant within the political arena. He was Founder of The Youth Leadership Foundation and Co-Founder of The Independent Political Club, both located in the Bronx. He was also a lifetime member of the N.A.A.C.P., working alongside such distinguished people as the Honorable Percy Sutton and former Mayor Dinkins. Their mission was to spread wisdom and advice to other organizations.
George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ethel and his son, Vincent.
He is survived by three children: Deborah L. Resto of Newburgh, Zsa Zsa J. Davis of Norwich and George M. Sands IV of Masonville; his grandchildren, Victor, Vincent, Raul, Raija, Andre’, Anthony, Reilly and Dyani; eight great-grandchildren along with many cousins and countless friends.
Funeral services will be on Saturday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 319 W. Main St., Sidney with Reverend Michael J. Shank officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. with the service immediatedly following. Interment will be at Woodland Cemetery, Bronx, at 1 p.m. Monday.
