Hong Xiu Marsland


GREENE – Hong Xiu (Mao) Marsland passed away Friday, April 3, 2009.
She is survived by her husband, David Marsland of Greene; Mother-in-Law Amy Marsland, Greene; her father and mother, Zhiyi Mao and Simel Mao; two brothers and a former husband, Qin Haibin of New York City.
Hong Xiu was born in Nan Lin, Guanxi Province, China, on August 2, 1973. She grew up on a farm and attended middle school. Later, she worked in an electrical equipment factory, in appliance sales and ran her own deli. She came to the United States in October 2004 and took residence in Flushing, NY., where she worked first as a waitress and then as a nail technician. Hong Xiu and David met through mutual friends and were married on July 26, 2008 on the grounds of Pal Yul Retreat Cener in McDonough. Most recently she had been working at a nail salon on Washington Avenue, Endicott and taking English classes at the American Civic Association. Hong Xiu, who chose the American name of Amy, was deeply loved by all who have known her since her arrival in this country. She was intelligent, beautiful, hard-working and funny, full of enthusiasm for life.
Her death leaves a deep gap in the lives of her friends, those who worked with her, and particularly in the hearts of her husband and mother-in-law. She was also much loved by her American realtives, Fr. Eugene and Alicia (Marsland) Geromel of Flint, Mi., Judy Wright of Bon Aqua, Tenn., Adam Marsland of Reseda, Calif., Mary Anne Marsland and Angeline of San Mateo, Calif., Lana Marsland, San Bruno, Calif., Gina and Adam Gallutia and Erica and Michael Murphy of Tullahoma, Tenn.
Funeral srvices will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Episcopal Church, 10 North Chenango Street, Greene. Friends of the family may call Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Zion Episcopal Church. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Civic Association, 131 Front St., Binghamton, NY 13905; or to Pal Yul Ling International, 359 Hollow Rd., McDonough, NY 13801.
Arrangements are under the direction of Root Funeral Home, 23 North Chenango St., Greene, NY 13778.
