Dewitt Cox


NORWICH – Dewitt J. Cox, 73, of State Route 12, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 02, 2009 at his home.
Born May 7, 1935 in Truxton, Dewitt was the son of Elmer and Florence (Marvin) Cox. After high school, he went to school at ICS to become an electrician. He worked several jobs including the Norwich Shoe Factory before retiring from Procter & Gamble in 2001.
An avid NASCAR fan, Dewitt also loved going to his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a member of the Norwich Elk’s Lodge for 33 years where he was a Past Exalted Ruler. He was also a Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler.
On July 20, 1960, in Oxford, Dewitt married Nelda “Pat” Duvall who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Cassandra Moore and her husband, David, of Norwich; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Teri Cox of Bowling Green, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Scott Cummings, Heather Cox and Cassie, Melinda and Dyer Moore; three sisters and their husbands, Joan and Ralph Hitchcock of Chestertown, Yvonne and Ed Aldridge of Tucson, Ariz. and Carol and Charlie Michium of Maine, NY. He is also survived by three brothers and their wives, Merle and Ellamae Cox of Norwich, David and Pat Cox of Georgetown and William Cox of Oregon. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Dewitt was predeceased by two brothers, Larry and Edward Cox and a sister, Eleanor Morehouse.
Funeral services for Dewitt will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Wilson Funeral Home. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday from 6 - 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 12:30 until the time of the funeral. Burial will take place in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dewitt may be made to the Elk’s National Scholarship Fund, 2750 N. Lakewood Ave., Chicago, IL 60614-2256 or to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.
