Evelyn Kosowsky


NORWICH – Evelyn B. Kosowsky, 89, of Norwich died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 in the Pearl and Everett Gilmour Health Care Facility where she has resided for the last three years. 
She was born on August 28, 1919 in Cambridge, NY to Forrest and Edna (Welling) Brownell.  On Sept. 19, 1943 she married Nicholas Kosowsky who died on Feb. 25, 1987.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Vera Hogan of Colorado.
Evelyn is survived by one son, Gary (Krista) Kosowsky of Norwich and one daughter, Vicki Kosowsky of Terre Haute, Ind.; three grandchildren, Debbie (Tom) LaBelle of Wynantskill, Kevin (Marybeth) Kosowsky of Grasonville, Md. and Mary Jane (Tom) Vautrin of Ballston Spa; five great grandchildren, Matthew and Nicholas Vautrin, Rebecca and Michael LaBelle and Danielle Kosowsky.  She is also survive by one brother, Donn (Dot) Brownell of Schaghticoke; two sisters, Norma Davis of California and Marion Moore of Valley Falls; and many nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews.
Evelyn was a graduate of Valley Falls High School, Green Mountain Junior College, Russell Sage College and SUNY College of Oneonta.  After teaching in the Oxford School system for a few years, she and her husband moved to Norwich where she taught for 28 years in the Home Economics department of the Norwich High School where she also served as the senior class advisor.  Mrs. “K” was a gifted teacher who truly cared about her students and her profession.  During her teaching career she was involved in many professional organizations including Delta Kappa Gamma, Association of University Women and served as an evaluator for the New York State Department of Education.
Throughout her life, Evelyn was active in many service organizations including the Pink Door, the Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, Daughters of the American Revolution and she served as a judge at the Chenango County Fair for the local Cooperative Extension until 2005.  In her retirement, she found great joy in working at the Windsor House of Bridals where she was a salesperson and seamstress.
Evelyn and her husband, Nick, were active and faithful member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church where both served on various committees and boards.  Evelyn was active in the United Methodist Women’s group where she served as an officer.  She was also on the board of the Wyoming Conference Methodist Homes and was a founding board member for the local Wyoming Conference retirement homes on the Doris L. Patrick campus which includes the Pearl and Everett Gilmour health Care Facility.
Evelyn was a loving and devoted wife and mother and she was a proud and doting “Gram” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She loved to cook and was counted on to bring the “favorites” to any family gathering.  She loved her family unconditionally and was a constant source of support and compassion.  She lived a rich and full life, enjoying the friendship of many and the time spent with her entire family.
A celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held in the Broad Street United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 21 at 10:30 am. with Pastor Jeff Hale officiating.  There will be no calling hours. 
The family requests any blessing of memorials be made in her name to the Broad Street United Methodist Church, 74 North Broad Street, Norwich, NY  13815.
