Doris Casamento


NORWICH – Doris A. Casamento, 85, formerly of State Route 23 and Daytona Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 in the Rome Nursing Home, Rome.
Born Dec. 19, 1923 in the Town of Leyden, Doris was the daughter of Jacob and Ella (Rowsam) Leichty. She spent her early years in the Boonville area and graduated from Boonville High School. She then received her Registered Nursing Degree from the Utica Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for over twenty-five years at Chenango Memorial Hospital as both a Surgical Nurse and later as Supervising Head Nurse. She retired in 1980.
She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church and of the Rosary Society of the Church.
On Nov. 1, 1945, in St. Bartholomew's Church, Doris married Joseph J. Casamento who passed away on Feb. 5, 1995.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen Reilly and her husband, James, of Mamaroneck, and Kathleen Hill of Hedgesville, W. Va.; two sons, Joseph Casamento and his wife, Sandra, of Fabius and Antonio Casamento of Los Altos, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five sisters, June Jenks, Rita Shanks and Irene Grenier, all of Boonville, Marion Carpenter of Constableville, Noreen Smith of Port Leyden. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was predeceased by her sisters, Erma Berger, Frances Burki and Evelyn DeVoe and her brothers, William and Walter Leichty.
A Mass of Resurrection of Doris will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Bartholomew’s Church with Rev. Frederick Mannara, pastor of Most Holy Rosary Church in Syracuse, celebrating. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Members of St. Bartholomew’s Rosary Society will recite the Rosary at 3:30 p.m. Burial will take place in the spring in St. Paul's Cemetery.
