Roseann Jewett

NORWICH – Roseann Jewett, 84, of Elm St., Norwich, passed away early Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in Richmond Hill, Long Island, in June of 1924, Roseann was the daughter of James and Florence Page Craven. She grew up in the Mineola area, and attended Corpus Christi Academy and St. Agnus Academy in Rockville Center. Prior to her marriage, she worked on Wall Street for the American Sugar Company. Roseann and Robert Jewett were married in Garden City, LI, on May 20,1944.
Roseann was a good and loving wife to her husband and, later, a loving and nurturing mother to her children. The needs of her family always took precedence over her own. She was good-hearted and generous to a fault. A city girl transplanted into the country in Chenango County, she was always willing to try new things and really loved the area. Roseann was an unbelievable seamstress who also took classes in upholstering, and she and Bob enjoyed working together to restore antiques. One of her joys was painting with oils, and she and Bob spent many happy hours at “Lake Steere.”
Following her move to Norwich, Roseann had taken adult education business courses through Norwich High School and a nurse’s aide course through Chenango Memorial Hospital. Balancing her time away from home with raising her children, she did bookkeeping and general secretarial work for the Norwich City School System, R & N Plumbing and Heating, the Norwich Community Chest, and worked as a nurse’s aide for Chenango Memorial before the Jewetts relocated to the Albany area because of Bob’s job. Roseann was also involved in the Norwich community during her time here. A member of the PTA who held offices within the group, she volunteered for Chenango Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Norwich YMCA, the Loyal Order of Moose, and St. Bartholomew’s Church, for which she served as secretary and president of the Guild.
Roseann is survived by her children and their spouses: Robert C. Jewett Jr. and wife Zivia Flomenhaft of New York City, Terrence J. and Elsbeth Jewett of Johnson City, and Bradley P. Jewett of Ridgefield, Conn.; her brother, James Craven Jr. of Missouri; and her grandchildren: Collin of Chicago, Jessica of Jersey City, Tully and Ava of New York City, and Maxwell of Ridgefield, Conn. She was predeceased by her husband. Bob, in October of 2008, and by her brother, Thomas Craven.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Roseann will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday from St. Bartholomew’s Church, with Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to come remember and celebrate Roseann’s life at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Roseann’s family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.
