Burt Landon

NORTH NORWICH – Burt M. Landon, 91, of Pleasant Street, North Norwich, passed away Wednesday morning, Jan. 21, 2009, at his home.
The son of Benjamin and Mary Landon, Burt was born in Newark, N.J. in March of 1917. He lived in northern New Jersey for most of his life, receiving his education in the local schools. During the depression in the 1930s, Burt worked in the CCC from 1935 to 1936, in both North and South Carolina on the Cooley Dam. With the advent of World War II, Burt went to serve his country in the U.S. Army in Africa, Italy, Sicily, France and Germany from 1943 to 1945. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and a Presidential Citation. After his honorable discharge, Burt returned to New Jersey, where he worked for Lincoln Plumbing and Heating in Paterson. In 1972, Burt relocated to this area, then moved to North Norwich in the late 1990s. Throughout his years, Burt honed his talent in woodworking until the articles he made were both lovely and remarkable. He had accepted Christ in 1981, and many of the items he made were for his church, the Calvary Baptist Church of Norwich. For the past 25 years, he had shared his faith by doing services in three area nursing homes and had served as a Deacon in his church for many years. Burt’s wife of 59 years, Ruth L. Kayhart Landon, predeceased him in 2001. On Oct. 9, 2004, in Norwich, Burt was united in marriage with Wanda Whitacre Burch.
Burt is survived by his wife, Wanda Landon, of North Norwich; by his children and their spouses Linda and John Clauss of Vernon, N.J. and Roger and Barbara Landon of Sayerville, N.J.; by his sister Marie of Texas and brother Willis of Butler, N.J.; and by his grandchildren Rebecca Bryson and husband John of Columbia, N.J., Briana Clauss of Seneca Falls, Travis Clauss of Vernon, N.J. and Scott and Samantha Landon.
