Hubert Barnes

GREENE – Following a courageous battle with cancer, Hubert A. Barnes of Greene completed his earthly journey and went to be with the Lord on Jan. 17, 2009 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his living wife and family.
Hubert was born on March 8, 1922 in Norwich the son of the late Albert and Florence Barnes.  He lived on the family farm in Norwich for many years, where he raised chickens and had an egg delivery route and was a school bus driver.  He had also worked at Norwich Pharmacal Co.
In 1961 he married Irene White, moved to Greene; and was employed at Greene Central School as a groundkeeper.  Following retirement he assisted his wife as custodian at a local bank.  He was a member of the Green Grange, the Algonquin Car Club and the First United Methodist Church of Greene, where he taught Sunday school and sang in the Men’s Choir.  A farmer at heart, he enjoyed gardening and working outdoors, where he felt next to God.  A man of strong faith, he weathered the “storms of life” with grace.
He is survived by his loving wife, Irene; his sons and daughters in law, David and Debra, Paul and Sharon, Barry and Paula and Dale and Wendy; his grandchildren, Timothy, Sarah, Peggy, Michelle, Tammy, Ashlee, Josh, Andrew and Alysha; seven great grandchildren; his brothers and sisters in law, Richard and Betty, Earl and Mary, Clayton and Marion and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends.  His family was his priority and greatest love.  However, his love, kindness, caring and generosity extended beyond his family.
He had a passion for antique cars and enjoyed riding in his 1949 Chevrolet at parades.  He was happy when his grandson, Tim, drove his to Church in his 1949 Chevrolet for his 80th birthday open house.  He will be sadly missed by many, but fondly remembered.  The family wishes to thank the staff at the RHCF of Chenango Memorial Hospital for the loving care he received.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday at the Kennedy Funeral Home, 21 N. Chenango St., Greene, with the Greene Grange conducting a service, followed by the Rev. Amy Gregory, pastor of his church officiating.  Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Norwich.
Friends may call at the Kennedy Funeral Home, Greene on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greene Emergency Squad, the Activity Department at Chenango Memorial Hospital or the Greene United Methodist Church.
