Nancy Bowers

NORTH NORWICH – Nancy Jo Bowers, 66, of Norwich, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at the Chenango Memorial Hospital, following complications of pneumonia.
Born in Erie, Pa., in February of 1942, Nancy was the daughter or Howard and Dorothy Wiggers TeWinkle. Nancy lived in many different areas throughout her youth and attended local schools, but was a graduate of the Union City High School in Union City, Pa. She continued her studies, attending first Indiana University in Pa. and later transferring to Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pa., where she earned her teaching degree in elementary education. Nancy did a bit of substitute teaching, but after her marriage in Union City on Sept. 2, 1961, to Eric Bowers, she moved with him to Germany where he was stationed and resided there for three years. The Bowers returned to Union City, then lived in Caledonia from October of 1964 until 1998. During her years in Caledonia, Nancy raised her family and did book work in the local grocery store. In 1998, they moved to Norwich where they opened the Save A Lot retail grocery store. Nancy’s family was her focus, and its members are close because of her. A caring lady whose warmth came from her Christian faith, she could create beauty from simplicity. She loved spending time with her family at Perkins Pond.
Nancy is survived by her husband Eric Bowers of Norwich; her children and their spouses: Debra and Tom Wight of Bolivar and Brian and Teresa Bowers of Liverpool; her grandchildren: Ryne, Andrea and Courtney Wight, and Ashleigh, Lindsey, Chelsea and Benjamin Bowers; and her sister and brother, Judith Winn of Marcellus and James TeWinkle of Savannah, NY.
A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday from the South Otselic United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carl Johnson, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Valley View Cemetery of South Otselic. Friends are invited to call at the South Otselic United Methodist Church on Wednesday from 6 to 6:30 p.m.
Please consider memorial contributions to the Norwich Emergency Squad, 31 East Main St., Norwich NY 13815 or to the South Otselic United Methodist Church, South Otselic NY 13155.
Arrangements are by the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home.
