Evelyn Doing

NORWICH – Evelyn B. Doing, 92, former Sidney and Norwich resident, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 3, 2009 in the New York State Veterans’ Home of Oxford, where she had made her home for the past two years.
The daughter of F. Robert and Blanche Brizze Beardsley, Evelyn was born in Norwich in April of 1916. She grew up in the Norwich area and was a 1934 graduate of the Norwich High School. Evelyn’s working career spanned for more than 40 years with several local telephone companies. She began with C&U in 1952, working as a clerk until 1970. At this point she broke away from the telephone company and worked from 1968-1970 for The Evening Sun. In 1972, Evelyn went back to work for what was then the Continental Telephone Co., working in the accounting department and retiring in 1981 from GTE. During the years with the telephone company, Evelyn had made her home in Norwich and Leesburg, Va., eventually moving to Sidney in the late 1980s. Several years ago, she decided to move to the Norwich-Preston area to be closer to her family and has made her home in the NYS Veterans’ Home for the past two years.
A gifted and talented lady, Evelyn enjoyed doing arts and crafts. While living in the Sidney she was a member of the local quilting club and over the years has made many fine quilts which her family still enjoys. She was also a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Sidney.
Evelyn is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Raymond and Rena Doing of South Plymouth; her grandchildren Scott (Rebecca) Doing of Smyrna, Steve (Christy) Doing of South Plymouth, Allan (Terri) Doing of Sherburne, David (Melody) Doing of North Norwich and nine great grandchildren. Also surviving is her brother Robert Beardsley of Norwich, along with nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was predeceased by a son, Charles Doing, and her brothers, James and Richard Beardsley.
A funeral service for Evelyn will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich. The Rev. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Sidney, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
