Irene Cornell

NORWICH – Irene M. Cornell of Norwich, passed away on Oct. 27, 2008 at the age of 94.
Irene was born in February 1914, the daughter of Ross E. Cornell and Lena D. Cornell. She is survived by her beloved family: two nieces, Kay Cornell Fletcher and husband Donald of Lancaster, Pa. and Donna Cornell Hogan and husband James of Norwich. Also, her favorite nephew, Mark Alan Sherman, of Boston, Mass. as well as six great nieces and nephews and seven great, great nieces and nephews.
The last of her siblings, she was predeceased by her brothers, Kenneth Cornell and Wilbur Cornell; her sister Marguerite Sherman; as well as a sister-in law, her fishing buddy, Helen DeSilva Cornell and nephew Frederick K. Cornell.
Irene was employed by Agway in Delhi for over 30 years and retired in the mid 70s. While living in Delhi, she was a member of the WIBC, a winning league bowling team throughout the 1960s and 70s. Also, as an avid Yankee fan, you knew not to call her when her Yankees were playing.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and doing all activities with her great nieces and nephews. When she was 70, while playing kick ball, she kicked the ball so hard that she broke her toe. She finished the game. In later years, Irene enjoyed baking, knitting and crocheting. We all cherish our afghans made especially for us.
A Memorial Mass for Irene will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday from the Marion Chapel of St. Paul’s Church, Norwich. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.
Arrangements are with the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
