Agnes Granger


McDONOUGH – Agnes Granger, 92, a life long resident of McDonough, passed away Thursday evening, Oct. 16, 2008 in the Valley View Manor Nursing Home of Norwich.
The daughter of Henry Elijah and Ida Sperry Nightengale, Agnes was born in September of 1916 in McDonough. She spent most of her time as a youth in McDonough, but with her father being a logger, she spent time in logging camps in Pitcher and Ohio, N.Y. On March 17, 1942, in Oxford, she married E. Jerome Granger, who passed sway Dec. 16. 1971. Over the years Agnes had worked on the family farm and at the Berglass Factory during World War II. She then went to work as a nurses aide for the Preston Manor Home, the Chenango Valley Home and Valley View Manor, retiring in 1976.
Agnes was a member of the East Pharsalia Baptist Church, the McDonough Fireman’s Ladies Auxiliary, a former member of the McDonough Grange and served on the board of the McDonough Union Cemetery for many years.
Agnes is survived by her children: William (Sammie) Kraft of Whitney Point, Gloria (Bill) Middleton of DeRuyter, Ruby VanDuser of Blossvale, Donald (Sherry) Granger of McDonough and Kenneth (Susie) Granger of East Pharsalia. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren, her loving nephew Ike Manwarren along with many other nieces, nephews, cousins and by many others who knew her as “Grandma.”
Besides her husband E. Jerome, she was predeceased by her son E. Jerome (Toad) Granger in 1968, a granddaughter Debbie Kraft Schoonmaker, a grandson Daniel Boone Graeff, her brothers Madison Sayles, Homer Cobb, Leon (Skibe) Graves and her sisters May Nightengale, Ruby McGowan, Estella Manwarren and Marie Prentice.
Funeral services for Agnes will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the East Pharsalia Baptist Church. Pastor Paul Hills will officiate. Interment will follow in the Union Cemetery of McDonough.
Calling hours for Agnes will be held Monday from noon until 7 p.m. at the home of her son, Donald Granger, 364 Beckwith Road, McDonough.
