Lloyd Burgess


COLUMBUS – Lloyd F. Burgess, 76, a resident of Harding’s Nursing Home, Waterville, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008 at the home following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Columbus on Jan. 5, 1932, the son of the late Ernest and Ruth Lloyd Burgess. Lloyd was a graduate of New Berlin High School. He worked as a farmer until entering the Army. Lloyd was a Korean War Veteran. He was united in marriage to Bernice Peeler in Ilion on March 7, 1958. Their loving union lasted 34 years until Bernice’s passing in 1992. He later married Thelma Fredericks on Oct. 25, 1996.
Lloyd was a long time employee of the Town of Sangerfield Highway Department.
He was also the owner of Lloyd’s Tavern located in Sangerfield until his retirement in 1988. Lloyd was a member of the Johnson-Rogers American Legion Post # 1492 of Brookfield.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma, a son and a daughter-in-law, David and Shelley Burgess of New Berlin, two sisters and brothers-in-laws; Myrtle and Bill Furness and Lillian and George Johnson all of Waterville, two sisters; Ellen Maine of North Brookfield, and Laura Stetson of Stockwell; four granddaughters, two grandsons, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Lloyd is also survived by two brothers-in-law; William Burgess and Alfred “Buck” Jaquay both of Brookfield, as well as a special nephew, Joe Sanderson of Waterville.
Lloyd is also predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen Chapman, a brother, Victor, and two sisters, Alma Jaquay and Anita Burgess.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 9, with the Rev. Clarence Hafelin officiating. Interment was in North Brookfield Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Paul Funeral Home of Brookfield.
