Doris Slater


SOUTH OTSELIC – Doris Coon Slater, 91, formerly of South Otselic and Sherburne, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2008 at Chenango Memorial Hospital Residential Healthcare Facility, Norwich.
She was born April 29, 1917 in East Syracuse, the daughter of Frederick and Bessie Holmes Coon and received her education in local schools. Doris married Wilfred Slater who predeceased her in 1996. Mrs. Slater had worked at the B.F. Gladding Corp. in South Otselic for many years. She had been a resident of the Pratt Newton Home in Sherburne for two years before moving to Norwich. Doris was an avid bowler, enjoyed playing bingo, loved to read and was a great cook.
Surviving are two daughters Judith Cole of Sherburne and Winifred Palmer of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren, Lisa and Barry Whorral of South Otselic; Lori Cook of Sherburne; Alyson and Brent Seymour of North Norwich; Bernard “Bim” Palmer, Jr. and his companion Sherry Guiles of Sherburne; Marine Master Sgt. Todd and Lisa Palmer of Sherburne; Wendi and Edward McClannan of Selma, N.C.; 12 great-grandchildren, Jennifer Golden, Corey Whorrall, Delaney Cook, Haley Seymour, Dylan Seymour, Emily Palmer, Cory Palmer, Brent Guiles, Anthony Palmer, Ashley Palmer, Erik Palmer and Felicia Reyes; two great-grandchildren, Leighanne and Kyle Golden; several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Doris’ wishes there will be no calling hours.
Graveside services were held at the convenience of the family in the Valley View Cemetery, South Otselic.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.
