Michael Flyzik


BAINBRIDGE – Michael J. Flyzik, 81, of Bainbridge passed away early Thursday morning, Sept. 4, 2008 at the NYS Veterans’ Home in Oxford, where he had been a resident since November 2002. 
Michael was born on Sept. 7, 1925, son of the late Charles J. and Susan (Yevchak) Flyzik in Lansford, Pa. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in January 1945 where he was an active athlete, and also attended Ithaca College for one year where he was a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa, the physical education profession fraternity. Michael then joined the United States Army Signal Corp. fighting in World War II from 1945-1946. 
On July 9, 1949, Michael married Mary Butler in Bainbridge.  She predeceased him on Oct. 25, 2002.  Michael was a supervisor at Borden’s Chemical Company in Bainbridge for 22 years, and also worked for Bainbridge Guilford Central Schools in maintenance from 1983 until his retirement in 1988. He played town baseball and basketball, and was also an active bowler, being inducted into the Tri County Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1991. Michael also helped organize the Little League in Bainbridge. He was a former member of the Fire Department as well as the Rotary Club, appearing in many shows. In retirement, Michael painted and did odd jobs in the area until suffering a stroke in 1991. 
Michael is survived by a son, Peter Flyzik of Kissimmee, Fla.; four daughters: Kathleen and James Black of Guilford, Cecilia Flyzik and Susan Foreman of Vernon, Cynthia and Mark Barwise of Orange County and Loraine Flyzik of Sidney; six grandchildren:  Kimberley, Alison and Tyler Barwise, Jarrett Black and Michael and Samantha Butcher; two sisters: Lillian Blakeley and Irene Terzo; three brothers: Charles Flyzik, Jr., Stephen Flyzik and John Flyzik; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins from Binghamton and Pennsylvania. 
Friends are invited to call on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main Street Sidney.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday by Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz at the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street Sidney. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge. 
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the NYS Veterans Home Resident Fund.
