Rose Caporal


NORWICH – Rose Mary Caporal, 92, of East Main Street, passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008 at her home.
Rose was born in Norwich on Oct. 26, 1915, the daughter of John and Caterina DeLosa Taranto. She graduated from Norwich High School with the Class of 1934 and then earned her bachelor’s degree from Elmira College in 1939. Rose worked as a medical technician at Providence Hospital in Detroit before spending three years at Arnot-Ogden Hospital in Elmira. Moving to Norwich during World War II, Rose worked at Chenango Memorial Hospital and helped care for her family. On Sept. 2, 1946, in St. Bartholomew’s Church, Rose married Arthur C. Caporal who died on Sept. 18, 1990. Together, Rose and Art lived in Elmira for fifteen years, raising their children. Returning to Norwich in 1961, Rose worked with her husband in the operation of the former Corner Cigar Store for over twenty-two years. She was a deeply devoted mother and grandmother who will be missed by all who knew her.
She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church and of the Rosary Society of the church.
Rose is survived by her children and their spouses, Barbara and Dwight MacArthur of Liverpool, Patricia and Jon Anderson of Brielle, N.J. and John Caporal of Norwich; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Norten, Nicole and Michelle Anderson and Samuel, Coco and Jack Caporal; three great grandchildren, Mark, Olivia and Benjamin Norten. She was predeceased by eight brothers, Angelo, James, Ernest, Harry, Cesar, Orlando, John and Alexander Taranto.
Funeral services for Rose will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Bartholomew’s Church. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. Members of the St. Bartholomew’s Rosary Society will recite the rosary at 4:30.
