Leonard Riehl


DERUYTER – Leonard B. Riehl, 82, of DeRuyter, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at the Cortland Regional Medical Center.
Leonard was born in Oriskany Falls on Oct. 14, 1925, a son of the late William and Beatrice Kellie Riehl.  He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Pacific Theater Campaign.  He received two Purple Heart medals for wounds received on Tulogi and Guadalcanal, the Presidential Citation with Blue Star for capture of Tulogi and the American Defense Medal for action against the enemies of the U.S.  He also received the WWII Medal and Conspicious Medal for service to the people of New York State and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze stars – two for action on Tulogi and Guadalcanal, one for action on Cape Closter, and one for action on Williamoza Peninsula.  He was a member of the Knickerbocker American Legion Post  #596, Cincinnatus, the DAV in Syracuse and The Purple Heart.  He was previously employed by the railroad and was a supervisor for cable television.
Leonard enjoyed pitching fast-pitch softball and played for the Norwich Shoe Factory.  He also enjoyed race car driving, traveling and dancing and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Stella Shepard Riehl, of DeRuyter; his daughters, Roxann Harvey of Pitcher, Cheri Ring of Oxford, and Valerie Hunt of Tully; his stepsons, Raymond Hubbard of Miami, Fla., Ralph Hubbard of DeRuyter, Ronald (Shannon) Hubbard of DeRuyter, Randy (Julie) Hubbard of Pitcher, and Richard Hubbard of DeRuyter.  He also leaves behind his siblings, Betty Biviano, Marlene Davis, Bernice Bush, Beatrice Heath, Ron (Jeanette) Riehl, Bobby Daniels, Kay (Norm) Drawdy, and Jean Loomis; several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Billy Riehl, Chuck Riehl, Carl Riehl, Keith Reihl, Carlene Snyder, and Corine Hagen.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, with Rev. William Haynes officiating.  Burial, with military honors, will be in North Pitcher Cemetery. 
The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m.
