Doris White


SOUTH NEW BERLIN – Doris Pearl White, 94, a lifelong resident of the Norwich and South New Berlin areas, went to be with her husband Freeland, where they walk hand and hand with their Lord, on June 17, 2008, in Leesberg, Fla.
Born in December of 1913 in South New Berlin, Doris was the daughter of Louis Henry and Dora Pearl Dixon White. She attended South New Berlin Normal School through the 11th grade, then transferred to Norwich Senior High School from which she graduated in 1932. On July 27, 1934, she married Freeland Keith White. They were married for 66 years before Freeland left Doris to be with the Lord on Jan. 10, 2001. Doris and Freeland made their home in South New Berlin, with Doris staying at home to raise their four children. She was an accomplished crocheter and made many beautiful dollies, tablecloths, stuffed animals, and baby blankets. For many years she crocheted baby layettes for a company that distributed them to stores across the northeast, including New York City and Norwich. She later worked for the Norwich Knitting Mill, Norween Shoes, and the Norwich Shoe Company, and then Scintilla in Sidney where she worked until her retirement. In their retirement, Doris and Freeland enjoyed traveling. They were members of the South New Berlin First Baptist Church for 45 years before moving to Norwich, eventually living in the Golden Age Apartments.
Doris is survived by her four children: Alfred Paul White of Virginia Beach, Va., Edwin Robert White and wife Barbara of Medina, Patricia Ann Rich of Leesburg, Fla., and Judy Jane White of Norwich; and by 64 grand, great, and great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Sheila Ann White Hoke, twin sons Lewis and Charles White, and other family members.
Memorial services for Doris will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Ken Simpson of Norwich will officiate. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be at a later date in me Riverside Cemetery of South New Berlin.
