Edward Newman Sr.


SHERBURNE – Edward J. Newman Sr. 85, of Classic St., passed away Friday, May 2, 2008 at his home.
He was born Sept. 20, 1922 in Sherburne a son of Roderick J. and Mary E. Cahill Newman. Ed was a graduate of Sherburne High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Genevieve Holcomb on July 11, 1942 in Sherburne. She predeceased him on June 11, 2001. He married Doris Mickle Barnard in Sherburne on Oct. 29, 2005. Ed was a truck driver for Agway until his retirement. He also took great pride in being the caretaker of St. Malachy’s Cemetery for many years.
He was a communicant of St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne; a 45-year member of the Sherburne Fire Department and a life member of the American Legion Post #876 of Sherburne.
Surviving are his wife, Doris; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward, Jr. and Alice Newman of Sherburne; Jim Newman and Carolyn Northcott of Santa Rose Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Edward Newman, Meagan Morris, Melissa Newman, Jeremy Newman and Joshua Newman; 5 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Genevieve Andrews of Sherburne; Louise Diamond of Westmoreland; a sister-in-law, Joan Newman of Sherburne; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson, Thomas J. Newman on Sept. 16, 2007, and a brother, Richard Newman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday from St. Malachy’s Church, East State St., Sherburne, followed by burial with military honors in St. Malachy’s Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Monday (today) from 7-9 p.m.
The rosary will be recited at the funeral home 6:45 p.m. today.
