NORWICH – Dr. Charles Eugene Jeffrey, of 9187 Somerset Dr., Barker, passed away April 10, 2008 of complications related to Parkinson’s disease.
Born Jan.28, 1926 in Norwich, he was the loving husband of Marian Tefft Jeffrey and the beloved son of the late Stanley and Dorothy Jeffrey. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: Charles M. Jeffrey (& Nancy Brown) of San Antonio, Texas; Steven Jeffrey of Barker; Jon Jeffrey (& Janet Plunkett) of Chappaqua; and daughter: Charlene Jeffrey Price (& Larry Price) of North Kingstown, R.I. Dr. Jeffrey also leaves four grandchildren: John Robert Jeffrey; Heather, Jeffrey, and Travis Price.
A Navy veteran, Charles served on LCI 784 in the Pacific during World War II and was one of the early servicemen to arrive in Japan in 1945.
He was a graduate of Hartwick College in 1950, Masters Syracuse U. in 1953 and Ph. D. Buffalo U. in 1968.
A life long educator in New YOrk, he taught math in Weedsport 1950-1954, Principal in Dalton 1954-1958 and Principal in Barker 1958-1961. In 1961 he accepted an administrative position at Buffalo U. and finished his career in 1995 as the Provost of UB’s Biology Dept.
As a 50 year resident of Barker, he was active in the Lions Club and served as Pres. ‘74/’75 and ‘86/’87. He was a very active member of Faith United Methodist Church in Barker.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at Faith United Methodist Church, 1449 Quaker Road, Barker, on Saturday at noon.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Dr. Charles E. Jeffrey college scholarship fund for students at Barker Central School, 1628 Quaker Road, Barker, NY 14012. Scholarships will be established in his name for students focused in education and community service.
