Josephine Herfort


OXFORD – Josephine T. (Jo) Herfort, 85 of Williamsport, Pa. and Oxford, passed away on Feb. 21, 2008 at Gatehouse Hospice in Williamsport, Pa. 
She was born April 10, 1922 in Greenwich Village, the daughter of the late Herbert W. and Josephine (Davis) Taylor. On Oct. 6, 1945 in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Great Neck, she married Richard A. Herfort, who died on March 26, 2004.
She is survived by her children, Philip W. and Cheryl D. Herfort of Williamsport, Pa., and Katherine H. and Ronald Alsum of Friesland, Wisc.; her grandchildren, Anthony P. Herfort of Washington, D.C., Constance J. Alsum of Madison, Wisc., and Katrina M. Herfort of Astoria.
She graduated from Great Neck High School, Great Neck, and attended Ithaca College as a piano major.  She worked for Sperry Gyroscope during World War II.  She had lived in Great Neck, Groton, Downsville, Rye, and for 51 years in Oxford, and this last year in Williamsport, Pa.  She was a charter member of the Norwich Lioness Club, the first female member of the Oxford Lions Club and served on many committees with both groups.  She was the District Reporter for District 20-Y1 for the New York and Bermuda Lions Magazine.  She served as the cabinet secretary for District 20-Y of the Lions.  She was a Melvin Jones Fellow of Lions International.  She and her husband attended 27 Lions International Conventions.  She attended the United Church of Oxford.
She had served as a reporter for both the Oxford Review-Times, and the Binghamton Sun for Chenango County. She was very active in music and played in the Norwich City Band, the Oxford Community Band the Chenango County Bicentennial Band in New York. Following her move to Williamsport, she played in the Repasz Band, the Imperial Teteque Band and the Jersey Shore Town Band. 
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Church of Oxford, 25 Main St., Oxford, with the Rev. Allen C. Lang, pastor, officiating.  Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
