Donald “red” Mcgregor


SMYRNA – Donald C. “Red” McGregor, 84, of East Main St., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008 at the Crouse Community Center, Morrisville.
He was born in North Dakota on Dec. 26, 1923, a son of Howard and Julia Kuhn McGregor. The family moved to Poolville, where Red, his father and his brother Eugene started McGregor and Sons (now Baillie Lumber in Smyrna) at the family farm. Red had also worked at various other occupations over the years, including truck driving, and was the groundskeeper at Paddleford Park in Sherburne for over 15 years until his retirement. On May 30, 1942, he was united in marriage to Joyce Spaulding in Sherrill. She predeceased him on Nov. 1, 2001.
Red was a member of the Smyrna Fire Department.
Surviving are his eight children and their spouses, Donna Jean Harrington of Smyrna; Mary A. Austin of Peoria, Ariz.; Roberta (Birdie) and Nelson S. Fox of Sherburne; Audrey and Terry Bennett of Smyrna; Gail and Kevin Gillette of Owego; Janie and Gary Musser of Whitman, Ariz.; Howard “Buzz” McGregor of Savannah, GA and Ralph McGregor of Clearwater, Fla.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marion (Frances) Tackabury of Poolville; Carolyn and Glenn Hances of Hubbardsville; a sister-in-law, Betty McGregor of Poolville; 21 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and many others who knew him as “Grandpa.” He was predeceased by his brother, Eugene, a brother-in-law, Howard Tackabury and a great-grandson, Daniel “DJ” Mercer.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.
Burial will be in the Poolville Cemetery in the spring.                                             
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
